Best in 2011: APPS

First things first, this category is game free.  Why?  Because I put Handheld/Phone Gaming in with the Gaming Best.

That said, I also must say I do not have an iPhone so all my apps are solely based on Android OS.  Some cross over, well most, but you won’t see iPhone Only listed here.

Think back 5 years ago, where would you be without internet in the waiting room, in commute or at work?  Well, 5 years ago is where you would be.  But it is hard to believe our world has changed this much that we can’t eve ride an elevator without checking Facebook or 4 Squaring your dinner location.  Great tool for anyone about to rob your condo, you just let them know that where you are for at least an hour or two.  Enough media bashing, there is some good to it, and here they are…

Sports App: FotMob Soccer Scores
News App: Google Reader
Audio Media App: Pocket Cast
Shopping App : Amazon App Store
Video Media App: Netflix
Social Media App: Twitter
Fitness App: Cardio Trainer Pro

Sports App: FotMob Soccer Scores

Want scores and news from anywhere in the soccer/football world, you will find it here.  If you are just looking for news updates you are better off with Goal.com’s app, it is far more packed with articles, game reviews, updates and the latest gossip.  But if you are a stat cruncher, and want numbers, standings and match-ups first then start here. Then use Goal for your news.

Free ad version, upgrade for a few bucks for ad-free.

News App: Google Reader

Sure some places up out some good solid news, but if you want to take the time to customize and organize exactly what you want to read then nothing beats a good RSS reader.  Some like Pulse look better, but the ease to manage on Google’s acct page makes gReader the only choice IMO.

Free.

Audio Media App: Pocket Cast

Imports and organizes all my favorite podcasts without having to do anything but hit play.  Sold.

$2.99 or something minimal.

Shopping App : Amazon App Store

A free, paid app a day, everyday.  I download and test out almost every app.  50% seem to be gaming, most I delete, but I have found some great paid apps and never paid a penny.  Also good if you want to move from a free/ad version but are in no rush and cheap.

Free.

Video Media App: Netflix

If you can watch movies on the “small” screen then you will be in love.  Netflix’s entire catalogue of streaming movies is available.  Performs as well as you phone can handle the data.

Free, but must have the streaming Netflix account.

Social Media App: Twitter

Only social media I use regularly.   I use Twitter like an AOL chat room to discuss sports and movies with random strangers.  Trying to tweet with Ashton is lame, but if used correctly Twitter is awesome.  Tweetcaster is a great app also, but the refresh on the Twitter Official app is much more convenient then shaking your phone like you have a bug.

Free.

Fitness App: Cardio Trainer Pro

GPS enabled to track speed and distance.  Also adds music if you want to hook in headphones and prompts you to distance, time and speed.  Tracks history to view progress and distance traveled by noting how far you have run over time on a map if you ran as the bird flies.

Free version.  Paid Pro-Version tracks calories and more.
